Computer forensics: Illegal use of cards in a retail store

This computer expertise was the result of the alleged illegal use of a credit card at a well-known retailer for a large amount of money.

Technical specifications:

Problem raised:

An illegal use of a credit card occurs at the merchant's premises. The bank argues collaboration on the part of the merchant, while the merchant claims to have taken all necessary security measures and the legality of the transaction.

Procedure followed:

  • Study of the documentation submitted.
  • Analysis of the records in sermepa.
  • Step-by-step reproduction on identical POS terminal of all the procedures referred to in the file with multiple cards.
  • Search for similar references in documentation and/or forums.

 

 Results obtained:

The report helped to understand more clearly the plausibility of the arguments presented by each of the parties, reproducing in a controlled manner the entire payment procedure. In this way, it was possible to verify whether or not the scenarios presented in the file were possible.
