NOISE POLLUTION: EVALUATION AND CONTROL

Noise pollution has become one of the main problems and controversies of our days, due, on the one hand, to the fact that our country has a very "noisy" culture and, on the other hand, to the appearance of very strict regulations and legislation for the protection of citizens, but which are not always easy to apply.

This is why noise has become a source of conflict.

What is noise pollution and how is it measured?

It is considered as such a noise that can cause both physiological and psychological disorders.

There are several types of measurement to establish noise levels, the most common being decibels dBa. This unit is intended to be a subjective measure of the perceived sound level and is not directly related to the physical intensity of the sound (which is a unit of energy density).

It also has the disadvantage that noise is subjective: for example, the sound of a formula 1 car can be "heavenly music" for a fan of this sport and quite another thing for someone who is not.

To get an idea of the magnitude of this measure, we refer to the following table:

  • 0 dBa: Sound hearing threshold. It is the minimum sound pressure we can hear. With age and hearing loss it tends to rise. The measurement is logarithmic, that means that at "0 dB" there is sound pressure and therefore, we can "hear something".
  • 25 dBa: Maximum external noise level(inimission) at night (21 to 8 hours) tolerable in an interior room, due to neighborhood activities, in a high sensitivity zone according to Law 16/2002.
  • 35-40 dBa: A refrigerator.
  • 40 dBa:Normal conversation level.
  • 80 dBa: Busy street.
  • 100-110 dBa: Disco dance floor ambience.
  • 125 dBa: Jet aircraft.
  • 140 dBa: Pain threshold (maximum tolerable).

Current legislation on noise pollution

There are multiple laws and regulations governing noise measurement and control:

  • Maximum levels and insulation of commercial activities. See here.
  • Construction regulations.
  • Verification and measurement protocols.
